Representatives of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Irkutsk – Shin Kyu Ho, deputy consul general, and Pak Chung Myung, technical officer of the Department of Culture – came on a visit to Tomsk State University. Together with representatives of the departments, research laboratories and the TSU administration, they discussed the possibilities of science and education collaboration, in particular, in biotechnology and exchange programs.
“By developing collaboration with universities, we strive to promote Korean studies, help establish and strengthen ties, and facilitate the exchange of teachers and students between the universities of the Republic of Korea and Russia,” says Shin Kyu Ho, deputy consul general of the Republic of Korea.

Artyom Rykun, TSU vice-rector for international relations, told the guests about the history of the university, educational and research opportunities for foreign students and scientists, about the sports and cultural life of the university. He mentioned that TSU has been successfully cooperating with research and educational institutions of the Republic of Korea for a long time.
Timofey Chekalkin, senior researcher at the Laboratory of Superelastic Biointerfaces, shared his personal experience and experience of the Laboratory for Medical Alloys and Shape Memory Implants, which has been actively cooperating with Ulsan University and the Borame Medical Center of the Seoul National University Clinic for 10 years. In 2017, the partners held the International conference Shape Memory Biomaterials and Implants in Medicine (Busan, South Korea).
“In 2021, together with the Borame Center, we applied for a project competition held by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technologies of the Republic of Korea. Our project “Creation of an integrated production technology and study of the performance properties of novel bioresorbable implants for bone tissue regeneration” was awarded the second place by the Korean Ministry. Now we are expecting the decision of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation,” Timofey Chekalkin says.
He emphasized that scientists from TSU and South Korea have already published more than 20 joint scientific publications, 3 monographs and received an international patent.
Larisa Andronova, associate professor of the Department of Oriental Studies, FIPN, added that Tomsk State University has been conducting Korean language courses and master classes on the art of Korea since 2008. Since 2019, owing to the Korea Foundation, TSU students have the opportunity to attend the online courses in Korean and English, which are implemented by Ewha University and Seoul University.
“The meeting was held in a warm and homely atmosphere. We hope that it will initiate closer cooperation between Russian lecturers and scientists with Korean colleagues, and increase the flow of Korean students to TSU,” Artyom Rykun says.
